WRIT6000: Professional Writing

Semester 2, 2025 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit introduces theories of professional writing with a specific focus on composing in the workplace. Students will develop abilities in analysing, writing, revising, and delivering workplace texts, both print and multimedia. By examining and discussing a range of actual workplace documents, from emails to websites, students will gain a broader understanding of the rhetorical principles and ethical responsibilities inherent in professional writing practice. They will improve their ability to negotiate the relationships, tensions, and politics that influence workplace writing contexts.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance
According to Faculty Board Resolutions, students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are expected to attend 90% of their classes. If you attend fewer than 50% of classes, regardless of the reasons, you may be referred to the Examiner’s Board. The Examiner’s Board will decide whether you should pass or fail the unit of study if your attendance falls below this threshold.

Preparation
Students should commit to spending approximately three hours’ preparation time (reading, studying, homework, essays, etc.) for every hour of scheduled instruction.

 

Simple extensions and late penalties

  • All students are welcome to a 5-day "simple extension" for assessments (except for the group work assessment where there can be no extensions). This means students do not have to apply for, or ask permission for, acquiring a simple extension.
  • For Assignment #1 (25%) and Assignment #3 (25%) the simple extension will run until 23:59 on the Wednesday following the Friday due date. Work submitted after this time will receive late penalties.
  • For Assignment #2 (the large group assignment worth 50%), there can be no extensions due to university policies, and late penalties will apply.
  • If a student is facing difficulties in participating effectively in the group assignment they (or their group members) should raise these concerns as soon as possible with their tutor or the coordinator who can assist this process.

Late penalties (5% per day)

  • For every calendar day up to and including ten calendar days after the due date, a penalty of 5% of the maximum awardable marks will be applied to late work. This penalty will be calculated by first marking the work, and then subtracting 5% of the maximum awardable mark for each calendar day after the due date.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Readings have been updated to include more recent sources and more work by scholars of colour. Constructive alignment has been achieved by revising seminar topics in accordance with four new overarching module themes. The UoS assessment structure has been redesigned around fewer assessments with more class time devoted to each.
