There’s never been a better time to do a graduate certificate or graduate diploma

5 February 2021
Interested in upskilling for a promotion or pivoting into a new industry?

Here at the University of Sydney Business School we offer a range of postgraduate diplomas and certificates across a variety of disciplines. Find out four reasons why there’s never been a better time to upskill in the subject that interests you.

1. Upskill and expand your CV

Have you always wanted to learn more about Marketing? Do you find yourself glancing over towards your Supply Chain colleagues and wishing you got to work on their projects? A graduate certificate or diploma is an efficient way of learning fundamental skills about a new topic, while providing you with a qualification to add to your CV.

Hashendra Wijesinha

"Enrolling in the Graduate Diploma in Commerce was an opportunity to upskill myself in an area I'm very passionate about - business sustainability. The flexibility of the program, in addition to its diverse course offering, and strong industry connections made it a very enriching experience for me.”

2. Network with employers, mentors and peers

You’ll meet people from a wide range of backgrounds and industries who share your passion for your chosen subject and your interest in upskilling. You’ll also have opportunities to connect with leading industry partners through a range of real-world consulting and placement programs throughout your studies. And when you graduate, you’ll join a network of over 380,000 University of Sydney alumni making an impact across the globe.

Karlyn Chow

HR & Payroll Coordinator, The iQ Group Global
"Having no previous experience in HR, I often left lectures and tutorials inspired. It encouraged me to follow through with a career change and provided a great pathway into studying the Master's degree. The support of the lecturers and staff was always there, especially reassuring during COVID-19, and the connections made with them and the other students are invaluable.”

3. Lead your field with the latest academic and industry insights

Perhaps it’s been several years since your undergraduate studies, you’re at a career crossroads, or that promotion at work feels just out of reach. Graduate diplomas and graduate certificates are an excellent way to focus-in on the most recent industry updates, best practice, and know-how to refresh your knowledge and arm you with the practical skills and fundamental knowledge to exceed in your current role or go for that promotion.

Liam French

Supply Chain & Operations Manager, Roland Corporation Australia.
“I was equipped with the technical knowledge and, just as importantly, developed my strategic thinking abilities with the skills and confidence to convey this information more effectively. I feel empowered to share this new-found knowledge on a global level because it was born from best practice in the industry.”

4. Flexible study options to suit your career and lifestyle

A graduate diploma or certificate requires less commitment of both your time and your money. If you opt for part time study, it’s a quick way of upskilling while still working, and if you opt for full time study, it’s less time out of the work force.

Choosing this pathway also allows you to keep your postgraduate options open should you wish to go on to study further. If you do decide you enjoyed the course content and you wish to study further, or perhaps you didn’t have the entry requirements to go straight into master’s level study, your graduate diploma or certificate learnings can be credited towards a master’s level program.

Natalie Jenkins

Strategic HR Business Partner, Thales Australia
“I started the Graduate Certificate to support my move into an HR Business Partner role. I found it has helped me to develop my knowledge and gain a good understanding of the Australian employment law landscape. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with peers in lectures and to expand my network, and this has led me to continue with further HRMIR studies.”
