Startup Year

Building innovation and entrepreneurship skills among students
The University of Sydney is proud to be launching Startup Year in Semester 1, 2024 for students going into 4th year (Advanced Studies).

The Startup Year program has been designed to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities for students, while supporting Australia’s start-up community, including for-profit ventures as well as those focused on social innovation and community-based entrepreneurship.

The units of study will prepare students for future intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial careers, including being a founder and creating a startup business. The program concludes with a semester building a plan (and possibly launching!) a startup business in the University’s INCUBATE accelerator.

Startup Year

Startup Year students will complete 48 credit points focussed on entrepreneurship in their 4th year of study.

Semester 1 (24 credit points total)

Two core units, offered by the Business School, must be completed by all Startup year students. These units provide practical skills and insights into what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

(a) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Foundation BUSS4907 (6 credit points)
(b) Innovator's skills and Actions BUSS4908 (6 credit points)

Students will also need to choose between:

(a) Entrepreneurship Project BUSS4917  (12 credit points)

OR

(b) An advanced 4000 level industry and community project (2 x 6 credit points).

Semester 2 (24 credit points total)

Startup Year student will complete one 24 credit point unit in Semester 2, Startup Project BUSS4909.

This unit allows students to take their startup idea through the INCUBATE accelerator, while completing university-level assessments. INCUBATE is an immersive experience, where students are situated in the startup ecosystem, with entrepreneurial mentors, opportunities to pitch your idea, and access to a network of investors providing the optimal environment to accelerate an idea into a successful startup business.

Advanced Studies students going into 4th year in 2024. You’ll need to have completed, or be on track to complete, all non-honours requirements of your degree by the end of your last semester of study. This includes both majors, all core units, all Open Learning Environment (OLE) units, Dalyell units (if you are in the Dalyell program) and any elective units. You'll also need 48 credit points remaining in your degree.

This is an opportunity to experience firsthand how startups are formed, from idea to launch to accelerating for scale. You will receive a solid grounding in innovation and entrepreneurship, building skills crucial to developing and framing your ideas.  These skills include experimenting, critiquing and validating your hypotheses, and increasing your effectiveness through networking and project management.

Startup Year will give you an in-depth understanding of what constitutes a good idea for a business or project, how products get started and built (from a technical and non-technical standpoint) and how new products can be effectively launched in the marketplace.

You will be exposed to the contemporary tools and frameworks including design thinking, business modelling, sales and funding from sources like venture capital. Startup year is a great way for potential founders and innovators to benefit from a wide network of ecosystem members.
