Pop in to the lobby of PHIVE for pop up talks and experiences exploring unexpected encounters and ideas all about ‘pop’: pop song hooks, dance music, public art and the politics of space, and play.
Featuring musicians and Sydney Conservatorium of Music lecturers Dr Paul (Mac) McDermott and Dr Jadey O’Regan, and interdisciplinary artists Nadia Odlum (PhD candidate) and Lile Khajavi (alumna) from Sydney College of the Arts.
Pre- or post- Sydney Ideas talks, head down to Riverside Live at PHIVE which will be transformed into a Jazz Bar with ensembles from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music performing nightly.

Lile Khajavi is an interdisciplinary artist based between Melbourne and Amsterdam. Her practice experiments with different forms of language, working across text, image, installation and spatial encounters. She is inspired by the interplay between artist and audience in creating a shared experience of becoming.
Lile is a recent Visual Arts Honours graduate from the Sydney College of the Arts at the University of Sydney, where she received the University Medal. She is currently completing a Master’s degree at the University of Melbourne.
Paul (Mac) McDermott teaches the Bachelor of Music Studies at the University of Sydney. In 2021, he was awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts which focussed on creating a unique compositional voice fusing Electronic Dance Music (EDM) traditions with experimental practice. His research interest focuses on Australian dance music history, building on his practice history as a participant in the EDM scene.
As a solo artist, he has been awarded a Best Dance Release ARIA for “Just the Thing” (2021), and as half of rave pioneers Itch-E & Scratch-E, he was awarded the same for their track “Sweetness & Light” (1995). He has collaborated with Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns on The Dissociatives (2004). As one half of Stereogamous he has been commissioned to remix artists including Kylie Minogue, Sia, George Michael, and Rufus du Sol. His most recent work, The Rise & Fall of St. George has been performed at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall (2020) and the Sydney Festival (2021).
Nadia Odlum is a multidisciplinary artist, Research Assistant with Art/Play/Risk Lab, and a PhD candidate at the Sydney College of the Arts.
They are driven by a fascination with urban environments. Using a broad range of materials and methods, they create playful and immersive works that explore personal and collective experiences of urban life. Often working site-specifically, Nadia deploys queer curiosity to seek out new interactions and perceptions within urban space.
Nadia's work has been shown in galleries and public spaces across Australia and internationally including Art Gallery of NSW, Carriageworks, as well as public art commissions for Urban Art Projects and the City of Parramatta. Nadia is a past artist in residence at Parramatta Artists’ Studios Rydalmere.
Jadey O’Regan is a Lecturer in Contemporary Music Practice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She is the co-author of Hooks in Popular Music (2022) with Dr Tim Byron, which combines pop musicology and music psychology to understand pop music in an interdisciplinary way.
She teaches songwriting, production, performance, music analysis and music history, and her research interests include the musical analysis of pop music, genres, songwriting, and creativity. She is an experienced music communicator who has been featured on Channel 7’s The Morning Show, ABC’s The Music Show, triplej, ABC News and at music conference BIGSOUND. She is also a performing musician and songwriter.
