Professor Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh named as Head of School
The Faculty of Engineering welcomes Professor Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh as the new Head of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise.

From January 2023 the highly regarded Professor Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh will join the University of Sydney as the Head of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
Most recently a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Professor Kalantar-Zadeh’s lengthy achievements include being named an ARC Laureate Fellow of 2018, co-authoring more than 500 scientific papers and books, and receiving several international awards.
Professor Kalantar-Zadeh says he is thrilled to take on the position as Head of School.
The School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has a long history of training highly regarded chemical engineers, who have shaped the industry and technology both in Australia and internationally.
Professor Kalantar-Zadeh hopes to see this continue, with his sights firmly set on building on the School's strengths across research and teaching.
"I want to showcase the School as the face of modern chemical and biomolecular engineering, and reinforce its position as a national and international leader in fields such as energy systems, sustainability, personalised medicine, chemical processing, and pharmaceuticals," he says.
"I also want to ensure our courses meet the needs of the community to ensure that our School remains a top institution for training and nurturing the best chemical and biomolecular engineers of the future."
With research interests in the fields of materials sciences, electronics, and transducers, Professor Kalantar-Zadeh has also been named in Clarivate’s list of highly cited researchers since 2018, ranking him in the top one per cent of his field.
He is best known for his works on two-dimensional semiconductors, ingestible sensors and liquid metals. This includes leading his research group to the invention of a human gas sensing capsule: a non-invasive ingestible chemical sensor to aid prevention, diagnosis and monitoring of gut disorders.
Professor Kalantar-Zadeh’s role as the Head of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering commenced 1 January 2023.
