Manufacturing and industry 4.0 encompasses research on digitally transforming manufacturing processes through automation, data and smart technology. Our researchers develop intelligent production systems that fuse the physical and digital worlds, from robotic assembly lines to AI-driven quality control.

Product design and manufacturing covers research at the nexus of creative design and engineering for production. This theme looks at how we conceive, develop and fabricate innovative products that meet societal needs and sustainability goals. Our researchers explore design for sustainability, ensuring products have minimal environmental footprint throughout their lifecycle.

Biomaterials and tissue engineering

The biomedical devices and diagnostics theme drives the invention of cutting-edge tools that detect and treat health problems with greater precision and personalization. Our engineers (across biomedical, electrical, chemical, and mechanical disciplines) create everything from wearable sensors and lab-on-a-chip systems to advanced imaging equipment and therapeutic devices.

Digital health and biomedical AI merges healthcare with information technology and artificial intelligence to create smarter, more connected health systems. Operating at the intersection of AI and medicine, this field is transforming the way healthcare is delivered, speeding up the development of treatments and helping to personalise medicine for individual patients.

Biomechanics and bionics

The theme combines an understanding of the human body’s mechanics with innovative engineering to enhance and restore human capabilities. Biomechanics is the study of how forces interact with the body – our researchers analyse movement and physical stress on bones, muscles and joints to inform better designs for injury prevention and performance improvement.
