Research - The University of Sydney

Our research engages with the complexities of projects to improve the quality of life for communities and future generations.

Research themes

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Artificial intelligence and machine learning drives advances in the algorithms and theories that enable smart machines. Our researchers are developing novel machine learning methods and principled AI techniques to enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of intelligent systems.

Intelligent sensing and internet of things

Our research merges sensor technology, connectivity and data analytics to create smart, interconnected systems. We design networks of sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that monitor infrastructure and the environment in real time, converting raw data into actionable intelligence.

Human-centred AI and ethics

Human-AI interaction examines the interplay between intelligent technologies and society, ensuring innovation aligns with human values. We study how AI and robotics influence social systems and human behaviour, exploring the social, ethical, legal and economic implications of these technologies.

Infrastructure and smart cities

Resiliet infrastructure and smart cities focuses on creating sustainable, resilient urban environments through innovation in infrastructure design and technology. This theme addresses how we build and manage cities to withstand climate impacts while improving liveability.

Agriculture and food

We apply advanced engineering to agriculture and food production to boost efficiency and sustainability. Our researchers leverage sensors, robotics and data analytics in precision farming to grow more with less, develop alternative proteins and innovative food processing techniques for more sustainable diets, and improve food supply chains through better management and technology to reduce waste.

Circular economy and resource recovery

Circular economy and resource recovery focuses on eliminating waste and maximising reuse of resources through innovative engineering. In this theme, our researchers develop technologies to transform waste streams into valuable products, create efficient recycling processes for materials like plastics and electronics, and design sustainable materials that have minimal environmental footprints throughout their lifecycle.

Manufacturing and industry 4.0

Manufacturing and industry 4.0 encompasses research on digitally transforming manufacturing processes through automation, data and smart technology. Our researchers develop intelligent production systems that fuse the physical and digital worlds, from robotic assembly lines to AI-driven quality control.

Product design and manufacturing

Product design and manufacturing covers research at the nexus of creative design and engineering for production. This theme looks at how we conceive, develop and fabricate innovative products that meet societal needs and sustainability goals. Our researchers explore design for sustainability, ensuring products have minimal environmental footprint throughout their lifecycle.
