(a) In order to carry out the placement of oral implants in general practice, students complete 48 credit points in the sequence indicated below

DENT5020 Implant Patient Selection

This unit aims to provide students at the postgraduate level details of clinical decision-making and evidence-based information on patient selection for oral implant care. This includes selection of patients for straight forward and advanced oral implant treatment. The student will also recognise complex cases and the need for multi-disciplinary treatment. The concept of work-up for these cases will be emphasised as well as various treatment modalities in oral implantology. Students will learn to collect the necessary history and records in preparation for treatment.

DENT5021 Implant Treatment Planning 1

This unit aims to provide students at the postgraduate level details of clinical decision-making and evidence-based information on implant treatment planning. This includes the selection of implant designs and the appropriate position of the implants to aid in the provision of the final restoration. Students will diagnostically plan the restoration and through the use of radiographic and surgical guides provide the ideal position of the implant. They will also make decisions in the various placement and loading protocols. Computer based software would be used to aid in treatment planning.

Credit points: 6 Teacher/Coordinator: Clin A/Prof Kent Yuen Session: Semester 2 Classes: 1x 5day block (8am - 5pm) Prerequisites: (DENT5020 and DENT5021 and DENT5022) or DENT5357 Corequisites: DENT5024 Prohibitions: physical and/or mental impairments jeopardizing performance of safe clinical dentistry and safety/health of patients and staff. Assumed knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of General Dentistry, particularly in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation Assessment: Clinical presentations (summative) (80%), Mentor feedback reports (20%) Practical field work: 6 x 6hr mentored clinical sessions in private practice + 6 x 6 hr patient preparation and treatment; self directed study. Students will be familiar with relational anatomy as well as surgical management of soft and hard tissues. This unit aims to provide students at the postgraduate level details of clinical decision-making and evidence-based information on implant clinical procedures. The student will be able to surgically place implants in various clinical presentations, perform the appropriate impression procedures and select the appropriate abutments and suprastructure materials. Minor bone augmentation procedures will be integrated into the surgical skill training to enhance implant outcome.

This unit provides students studying at the postgraduate level with clinical and evidence-based information on surgical and prosthodontic procedures for oral implant care. Students will learn the importance of clinical data and analysis of success and failures. They will recognise complications both surgically and restoratively as well as possible aetiology and treatment. There should be an understanding that osseointegration and its stability is multi-factorial and dependent on various biological and microbiological processes.

This unit aims to provide students at the postgraduate level details of clinical decision-making and evidence-based information on implant advanced procedures. Students will be able to analyse more complex cases including full arch implant supported fixed restorations. The students will also apreciate the ossibility of treatment planning with complex multidisciplinary procedures as well as the use of implants in other maxillofacial applications.
