This is the foundation block for the knowledge and training related to dental implants and dental implant surgery. The course consists of an introductory study on the biological basis of osseointegration, bone repair and wound healing, the design of modern dental implants and the bio-mechanical principles of prosthetic construction on implant supports. Furthermore, implant maintenance and complications associated with dental implants will be discussed. Training in the practical sessions will familiarize the students with different implant systems, their technical characteristics and surgical tooling features. The clinical training will focus on implant maintenance, the patient assessment process and protocol and the skill in developing a rational and appropriate treatment plan for the patient. Surgical placement of dental implants in non-complicated cases will be attempted during semester 2. Regular journal clubs, seminars and workshops are held to critically evaluate the current literature and to gain the theoretical background required. Didactic instruction in this course complements clinical activities.
