Much like the rest of the Matilda Centre, the Matilda Centre Youth Advisory Board (YAB) members have been getting involved in research communication activities outside of our regular quarterly meetings over the past few months.
In late August, YAB co-chairs Thomas Wedding and Heidi Berry flew to Sydney for an exciting content shoot with the University of Sydney’s Marketing and Communications team.
For a day, they enjoyed a behind-the-scenes experience of a professional video and photoshoot reviewing scripts, sharing insights to refine the storyline and even stepping in front of the camera to deliver the work. Without giving too much away, we think it will be a great way to showcase how co-design with young people creates effective and accessible programs for our communities.
Keep an eye on Matilda and University of Sydney socials to see the final product and more behind-the-scenes action!

LinkOutside of Sydney, Wellington-based YAB member Mason Hill got involved in the Strong & Deadly Futures Vaping Prevention Module development by reviewing the project team’s script for an Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) consent information video. The video was used to explain to participating students that any information they may share from their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture will always be owned by them and will only be used with their permission.
It was shared with students participating in school-based co-design workshops across the country (including at his own school!) as part of the new module's creation and helped students make an informed decision when providing ICIP consent. Mason’s feedback on the script ensured that the concepts around ICIP protections and consent were communicated clearly and suitably for a high-school audience.
As we head into the final months of 2025, we look forward to two more YAB meetings, including an exciting Sydney-based meeting taking place over two days in November, where we will welcome all our out-of-town members and introduce them to some of our fantastic local cultural and educational sites.
The YAB also continues to evolve, with new consultation initiatives being developed and continued piloting of increased YAB member presence on Matilda Centre social media channels through their development of creative reels shining a light on Matilda research.
