The Matilda Centre hosts the PREMISE Next Generation NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Prevention of Mental Illness and Substance Use which was funded in 2024 by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council.

The Premise Next Generation Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) is co-directed by Professors Tim Slade, Nicola Newton and Cath Chapman with mentorship from Professor Maree Teesson.

The CRE builds on our previous CREs and will bring together 7 world-leading translational research centres in youth mental health and substance use, together with Australia’s largest group of health economists dedicated to mental health to meet significant new challenges in the prevention of mental health and substance use disorders.

The global landscape of youth mental health and substance use is rapidly changing. Precipitous rises in youth anxiety, depression and self-harm, coupled with major population shifts in risk factors and emerging challenges, call for urgent new approaches to prevent mental and substance use disorders.

Objectives in a snapshot

The PREMISE Next Generation CRE aims to drive sustained improvements in the mental health of young Australians. The PREMISE Next Generation CRE will:

  1. Expand the identification of new targets for prevention through cutting edge causal modelling of large, harmonised data sets
  2. Optimise and adapt existing preventive interventions to address contemporary issues for young people
  3. Generate a transformative shift in health care by establishing a sustainable framework for program implementation, and experience to ensure that this innovation can be sustained in the future
  4. Grow and mentor a large cohort of mental health and substance use early- and mid-career researchers, youth, and people with lived experience to ensure that this innovation can be sustained into the future
