BIOTRONIK and the University of Sydney have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop digital and connected health solutions aimed at improving cardiac care

The collaboration brings together BIOTRONIK’s expertise in implanted cardiac devices and remote monitoring with the University’s research capabilities and the WARC: Westmead Applied Research Centre University of Sydney's experience in patient-facing digital health tools.

The initiative will focus on co-designing scalable solutions that address real-world clinical needs, particularly for patients in remote or underserved regions with limited access to care. Areas of development include remote patient monitoring, AI, and clinical decision support.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing patient-centered, value-based healthcare through innovation and evidence-based approaches.

In a major step toward improving public health outcomes in New South Wales, Professor Clara Chow has been appointed to two high-impact advisory groups focused on tackling chronic disease: the NSW Ministry of Health’s Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) on Diabetes Prevention and the Heart Foundation’s Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Taskforce.

Professor Chow’s appointment to the CAG reflects her extensive expertise in cardiovascular and public health research, and her commitment to evidence-based policy development.

These appointments underscore Professor Chow’s leadership in chronic disease prevention and her pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare in NSW and beyond,” said a spokesperson from the Heart Foundation.

Both initiatives are expected to deliver actionable insights and practical recommendations that will help reduce the burden of chronic diseases and improve cardiovascular outcomes for communities across Australia.

Highlights

  • Celebrating innovation and impact at the Western Sydney Showcase
Professor Clara Chow AM, Academic Director, Westmead Applied Research Centre, spoke about HeartHealth, a digital health innovation program designed to support patients in improving their heart health after being discharged. This program was developed by clinicians at Westmead Cardiology, delivering evidence-based advice via text messages. Thousands of patients have opted-in to the program and have seen a reduction in rehospitalisation, as well as received invaluable positive feedback from participants. They are currently expanding the program to further personalise the content and include language translation to reach more parts of the diverse Western Sydney community.
  • MRFF Cardiovascular Health Mission
Professor Clara Chow and team were awarded $3 million from the MRFF Cardiovascular Health Mission for “CARDIOCHARGE- CARDIOvascular support for patients after disCHARGE”, a personalised digital health program supporting cardiovascular patients post discharge. This exciting program will be delivered through our WARC owned and created DigiCuris platform.

Dr Sonali Munot is a Chief Investigator on a project entitled “Improving outcomes and survivorship following sudden cardiac arrest in the young - IMPROVE-SCA”, led by Associate Professor Jodie Ingles. The project received $5 million from the MRFF Cardiovascular Health Mission.

  • WARC collaborate with Google on health tech
We're leading the way in providing accessible solutions for people with heart disease. Professor Clara Chow and her team received funds to support their projects MICArdiac and TextCARE. The initiatives facilitate behaviour change by nudging consumers to make better, more informed choices.
