Our highly practical metabolic health program is delivered by international leaders in the field of diabetes and metabolic health.

1. Importance of metabolic health

Good metabolic health is a key factor in preventing chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.

Overweight and obesity: Two in three Australian adults live with overweight and obesity, which arise from a complex interplay of energy imbalance and biological, psychological, environmental, and societal factors. There is an urgent need for effective prevention and management of obesity at individual, community, and population levels.

Prediabetes and diabetes: One in six Australian adults have prediabetes; one in fifteen have diabetes. Appropriate screening, diagnosis, and management of prediabetes can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and related complications, and cardiovascular disease. Treatment options for diabetes are rapidly expanding, with increasing availability of medications (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, GLP1-RAs; dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, GIP/GLP1-RA) and new technology (e.g. continuous glucose monitoring, CGM; insulin pumps; automated insulin delivery systems).

2. Practical and clinically-focused curriculum

Our highly practical metabolic health courses are case-based and clinically-focused, delivered by local and international leaders in the field.

They are designed to provide you with the most up-to-date advances in diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular health so you can confidently manage metabolic conditions in the general population, as well as in at-risk populations such as pregnant women, the elderly, and indigenous peoples.

There is a broad range of electives available including clinical ethics, leadership in health, genomics in clinical practice, quality and safety in healthcare, and teaching in the clinical environment.

Master’s level study will further help you develop the ethical and critical thinking needed to inform and contribute to best practice in your profession.

3. Flexible study

Coursework is delivered 100% online with online lectures, webinars and workshops which provide an opportunity to refine your skills while interacting with senior clinicians and fellow students.

The learning material can be accessed at a time and place that suits you, including on your mobile devices.

You can tailor your course load to meet your professional demands, taking up to 24 credit points per semester. If you are working full-time, consider undertaking 6-12 credit points per semester.

4. Interdisciplinary learning

Our courses are suitable for medical graduates, nursing, and allied health professionals. Some units can also be taken by non-clinical students interested in public health aspects of metabolic health.

Entry for medically-qualified professionals is offered through the Master of Medicine (Metabolic Health).

Entry for nursing and allied health professionals is offered through the Master of Science in Medicine (Metabolic Health)

Coursework can be undertaken at graduate certificate, graduate diploma, master’s and advanced master’s level and there is an opportunity for movement between these options. Find out more.

5. Shorter courses

For students wanting to undertake a shorter course with specialised learning in metabolic health, we also offer Sydney Professional Certificates in Metabolic Health, Metabolic Management or Diabetes Management.

These shorter courses combine two units of study, typically across two semesters.

Your additional study will be recognised with a certificate from the University of Sydney, and recorded on your academic transcript.
