Impressions of Greece: Historic Photography

Explore the sites of early Modern Greece through William Woodhouse's photography
On Thursday 18 May, 6.30pm hear from Candace Richards on the rare and significant photographic archive of William Woodhouse.

The Nicholson Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum maintains an incredibly rare and significant archive of glass plate negatives that capture the landscapes, archaeological sites and village life of Greece between 1890 and 1922, taken by former curator William J Woodhouse.

When traversing the mountain passes of Aetolia, visiting the monasteries of Meteora, surveying the ancient remains of the Peloponnese or enjoying Easter festivities on the Pynx at Athens, Woodhouse always had his camera at the ready. This lecture will explore the archive, Woodhouse’s legacy at the Nicholson and reflect on the ongoing Flickr project to document the collection.

In this talk Candace Richards, Assistant Curator, Nicholson Collection, will discuss a collection of rare and important photographs that captured Greek landscapes, archaeological sites and village life between 1890 and 1910.
