About us

Restoring vision since 1985
We're conveniently located in the heart of Sydney, within the Sydney Eye Hospital. Our institute facilitates research, education and patient care to prevent vision loss from eye diseases and conditions.

Vision loss has significant economic and social impacts on the Australian community, costing the economy more than $16 billion annually for persons aged 40 and over alone.

We're working to find better treatments and to improve the quality of life of people with eye diseases, through:

  • Research: Our renowned team of laboratory and clinical researchers are at the forefront of ophthalmic breakthroughs, and our findings have already saved the sight of many people living with eye disease since the institute was formed in 1985.
  • Education: We have a distinguished history as a centre of excellence in the teaching of ophthalmology and research skills.
  • Patient services: We provide specialised clinical services and research in the diagnosis, treatment and management of eye diseases.

Our partners

Sydney Eye Hospital

We're located on the historic and central premises of the Sydney Eye Hospital on Macquarie Street in Sydney. This co-location has important benefits for the treatment of patients and for clinical trials and research.

We're also responsible for operating the Sydney Eye Hospital’s large lucentis injection clinic for patients suffering from macular degeneration.

Lions Club

We were established with seed funding provided by the Lions NSW/ACT Save Sight Foundation. This support has continued over the years, with the Lions Clubs providing critical funding for clinical equipment and technology to assist with patient care.
