Who's eligible

You must:

  • be a Domestic student
  • plan to enrol full-time in a University of Sydney Business School undergraduate coursework degree
  • plan to start your studies in the year of award
  • have completed the NSW Higher School Certificate or approved equivalent in the year prior to the degree.

Background

Established from a generous donation from Qantas in honour of James Strong, this scholarship supports talented students to study a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney Business School.

1.      Background

a.      Established in 2013 by a generous donation from Qantas, this scholarship supports emerging leaders with a demonstrated interest in business and contributing to their community.

2.      Eligibility

a.    Applicants must be Domestic students

b.    Applicants must have successfully applied through UAC to commence an undergraduate degree administered by the University of Sydney Business School.

c.    Applicants must have applied for the Sydney Scholars Award and achieved an ATAR (or equivalent) of at least 97 in the NSW HSC or equivalent.

3.      Selection Criteria

a.      The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

            I.       academic merit, and

            II.      a personal statement that demonstrates leadership skills, community involvement, and an interest in Business.

b.      The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the University of Sydney Business School, or their nominated delegates.

4.      Value

a.      The Scholarship is valued at $9,000 per annum and is tenable for up to three years.

b.      The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c.      Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted.

d.      Transfer of the Scholarship to another degree program is not permitted without the permission of the Dean responsible for the initial program and does not involve lengthening the tenure of this Scholarship.

e.      The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f.       No other amount is payable.

5.      Ongoing eligibility

a.      To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must enrol in 24 credit points each semester and maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 75. Undertaking a minimum full-time load will not extend the duration of the scholarship.

b.      Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

c.      Recipients are required to submit a 200-word statement to the Business School (business.scholarships@sydney.edu.au) before 15 December in each year of holding the scholarship, summarising their involvement and impact in leadership and community spaces.

6.      Termination

a.      The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

            I.        withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

            II.       enrols in fewer than 22 credit points in a semester without prior approval by the Business School,

            III.      does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

            IV.      is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

            V.          accepts an alternative multi-year scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $6,000 per annum or more,

            VI.          does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

            VII.          any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b.      Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c.      Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.

7.      Other Requirements

a.      Scholarship recipients may be invited to promote the program in which they are enrolled, represent the University of Sydney at student welcome, marketing events and corporate networking events and fulfil the on-campus functions of a Business School Student Ambassador.
