The University of Sydney Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) was established in March 2017, with a dual mandate of providing students with hands-on equity analysis and portfolio management experience and to fund regular scholarships for students at the University with surplus funds generated by current students. We acknowledge the important contribution of the TDM Foundation and related individuals who have generously donated to this fund and without whom this scholarship would not be possible.
1. Background
a. This Scholarship was established in 2021 to assist students commencing studies at the University of Sydney Business School.
b. This Scholarship is funded by the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) and its benefactors, including the TDM Foundation.
2. Eligibility
a. The applicant must meet the Early Offer Year 12 (E12) Pathways Scheme eligibility criteria regarding financial hardship or residing in an area of socio-economic disadvantage.
b. The applicant must receive an unconditional E12 admission offer for the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.
c. The applicant must enrol in the degree for which an unconditional E12 offer was received, and
d. The applicant must have completed the NSW High School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent in the year prior to commencement of the undergraduate degree.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit, and
II. an interview where the applicant must demonstrate leadership, initiative and creativity, and extracurricular achievements.
b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the University of Sydney Business School, or their nominated delegates.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $7,500 per annum and is tenable for one year.
b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty, or university.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing eligibility
a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 50 each semester.
b. The applicant must remain enrolled in an eligible undergraduate Business degree as their E12 course admission offer via the Early Offer Year 12 scheme.
c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship,
VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
