Narrabri School Field Day
Discover cutting-edge agricultural research
A unique opportunity to explore our amazing grains research facility in Narrabri and to see, feel and taste the agricultural impact it has to offer.
Our I.A. Watson Grains Research Centre in Narrabri is a hub for agricultural innovation, bringing together leading researchers, academics and industry partners to tackle the biggest challenges facing Australian farming and global food security.
At our Annual Open Day event in September students can explore the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities including experimental crops, specialised laboratories and modern farming equipment and technology.
Visitors will get the chance to meet our researchers, learn about the latest in cutting-edge agricultural research; check out our field displays of crop research including integration of new digital technologies, wheat genetics to support growers, pulses for protein and future cropping systems; and discover how we’re building a future for commercial wheat breeding.
Our Narrbari campus also actively seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into its research, working closely with local Aboriginal communities to explore the potential of native grains and promote cultural exchange. By incorporating the expertise of Traditional Owners and local communities, the centre aims to enrich its understanding of these valuable crops.
Local Kamilaroi woman Kerrie-Ann Saunders, the Faculty of Science’s Indigenous Engagement Officer, leads Bush Tucker tours for visitors on the land adjoining the I.A. Watson Grains Centre, sharing insights into local Aboriginal culture, traditional food sources, and the region’s rich history.
Visitors on these tours can also sit in the peaceful Yarning Circle the University has funded, a space where people come together to share stories, discuss issues and learn from one another, while looking out over the fields and landscape towards the majestic Nandewar Range and the prominent peak of Mt Kaputar.
Kickstart on the Road programs are also available at our Narrabri facilities.
The Open Day takes place September each year, with separate days dedicated to industry partners and school students.
