Industry Placement Program

How to apply

The placement program application is a three-part process and consists of the following steps:

  1. Apply for departmental permission in Sydney Student
  2. Complete an online application in Sonia Online
  3. Complete an online interview.

If you have been impacted by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, and think you’ll be unable to complete the application by the deadline, email us at business.placements@sydney.edu.au

1. Departmental permission

First, you will need to log in to Sydney Student and add the unit of study relevant to your placement. You should refer to the Sonia Online homepage for the unit of study you need to add.

When you select the unit, you'll be prompted to apply for departmental permission so that it can be assessed whether you meet the eligibility criteria and if you have room in your degree.

After you have applied for departmental permission, you can then proceed to Step 2 and complete the online application process.

If you receive a notification that you have not met the course requirements for the unit of study, you are not eligible to participate in the program based on your current enrolment status and the associated degree progression information available in Sydney Student (e.g. degree, specialisations and elective space in your degree). Please do not proceed to Step 2 in the application process.

If you are applying for an international placement program, you are required to attach a copy of your current passport identification page to your departmental permission application. Failure to do so will result in your application being rejected.

2. Online application

You will need to lodge your application through Sonia Online by the application deadline. You can find instructions in the Sonia Online application user guide (pdf, 776KB).

As part of your application you will be asked to include:

  • a copy of your resume. We recommend that you use this resume template (pdf, 125.8KB) when preparing your resume
  • a copy of your academic record printed from Sydney Student
  • supporting documents (if you're applying for a scholarship)
  • an image of your current passport identification page (for international programs only)

Your documents need to be submitted as a single Microsoft Word document, no larger than 12MB.

3. Online interview

Once applications have closed, we will email your University student email account with instructions to complete your industry placement program online interview.

Online interviews are conducted using Sonru and you will have approximately two days to complete it.

Before attempting the interview, please keep in mind the following.

  • You can use a desktop, laptop or mobile device.
  • You will need good internet connection, a webcam and a microphone.
  • You will have only 1 attempt at completing the online interview in Sonru, so we strongly recommend that you become familiar with the system beforehand and don’t leave your interview to the last minute.

Your Industry Placement Program application is not complete until you have completed Steps 1,2 and 3. Late applications will not be accepted.
