Set yourself up for university success with our Welcome Program

All the things you need to know to prepare for university life
Our Welcome Program is packed with essential orientation sessions for new students, workshops and information sessions for returning students to get back into the swing of university life, and social events for all students. By attending, you’ll be set to get the most out of your time at university.

Our Welcome Program is your opportunity to familiarise yourself with the University of Sydney and your faculty or school, plus find out what services and resources are available to you as a student.

It’ll also provide you with an awesome chance to connect with your fellow students and immerse yourself in student life.

Ahead of Welcome kicking off on Monday 10 February, here are eight things you can do to make the most of the program.

1. Plan your schedule

To ensure you don’t miss out on any essential events, check out the Welcome Planner and register for our workshops and events to create your personalised program.

In Semester 1, 2025, the Welcome Program will begin on Monday 10 February and continue into Week 4 of the semester. It’s best to register as soon as you can, as events with limited spots will fill up quickly!

2. Attend your faculty or school welcome

Take advantage of your faculty or school welcome events. These information sessions and events are where you’ll find out essential information about your course, meet your classmates and teachers, and find out how to receive mentoring from senior students in your area of study.

Be sure to take notes on important locations such as faculty or school buildings, key dates and the names of academic staff who are here to help you, like your undergraduate coordinator.

Faculty and school welcome events will run from Monday 17 February until Friday 21 February. To quickly find events relevant to you, use the filtering tool on the Welcome Planner to find your faculty or school.

3. Learn new skills at information sessions and workshops

Want to know how to get the most out of your lectures? Or are you keen to brush up on your essay writingtime management, and critical writing skills?

During Welcome you have access to a variety of information sessions and workshops for any stage of your university journey, whether you’ve just started or are heading into your final year.

4. Explore campus

Did you know that our Camperdown/Darlington Campus is so big it has its own postcode – 2006?

Attending Welcome is a good chance to explore campus and get your bearings so that you don’t wander into the wrong lecture theatre on the first day of semester! Using Campus Maps is a great way to locate buildings, classrooms, study spaces and food outlets.

Lost on campus? Feel free to approach our Student Life Ambassadors (SLAs) or friendly staff if you need help to find your way. SLAs can usually be identified by a bright orange volunteer shirt, and staff are usually identified by a staff lanyard or University t-shirt.

5. Drop by the University stalls on Eastern Avenue

USU’s Welcome Fest takes place from 19 – 21 February, and during that time you’ll find a range of university stalls to explore along Eastern Avenue, from faculties and schools to the Chau Chak Wing Museum and the Library.

Drop by to talk to staff members and find out more about upcoming initiatives taking place throughout Semester 1. Fisher Library is a great place to start – you can visit the Library stall to learn about events and activities hosted at libraries across campus, talk to staff about library services and resources available, and score some awesome free merchandise, all before checking out our incredible Fisher Library – a multi-story building filled with books rare and new.

6. Visit the Student Centre

The team at the Student Centre can assist you with administrative matters like getting your student card, reviewing your class timetables, finding out about exam support, and understanding HECS and other fees.

The Student Centre has temporarily relocated to the Fisher Library Learning Hub (F03). Fisher Library is the primary Student Centre location, but student card services are available from Jane Foss Russell Cards Hub (G02, level 3).
