Conversations on Energy Justice

Framing energy justice: concepts, contexts, and challenges
A two-day academic workshop exploring energy justice and poverty, with presentations, structured dialogue, and a community tour. Hosted at the University of Sydney, 10–11 November.

Conversations on Energy Justice was a two-day academic workshop convened by Dr Lee White (University of Sydney) and Prof Harriet Thomson (University of Glasgow), aimed at fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on the conceptual, methodological, and practical dimensions of energy justice and energy poverty.

The primary workshop took place on 10th November, from 10:00am to 5:30pm, at the University of Sydney. Participants were invited to contribute a lightning presentation ( a concise, three-minute overview of current research or methodological approaches).

The structured sessions addressed key challenges in the Australian energy justice landscape, including the identification of root causes of energy poverty, the populations most affected, and the role of physical infrastructure and governance frameworks. A dedicated segment critically examined terminology, measurement, and conceptual framings, with a focus on applicability and resonance within the Australian context. The aim was to develop more precise, actionable, and context-sensitive understandings of energy injustice and energy poverty.

On 11th November, participants engaged in informal activities, including a morning tour of local community energy initiatives, followed by a group lunch. This component offered an opportunity to see energy infrastructure ‘in place’,and reflect on workshop discussions in a more relaxed setting.

This workshop was designed as a collaborative space for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to share insights, build connections, and advance collective understanding of energy justice.
