Writing the Pacific in critical and creative practice

A workshop with Craig Santos Perez

How do Pacific contexts unsettle dominant conventions in poetic, philosophical, and ecological thought and practice? What alternate forms do they require and empower? In what ways do junctures of critical and creative practices make such forms palpable? This workshop, hosted by the Sydney Environment Institute in conjunction with the Sydney Environmental Humanities Lecture Series, invites participation from colleagues whose undertakings engage these and related matters.

Professor Craig Santos Perez’s practice vividly reflects these connections and concerns. Participants will join him in sharing work, exploring unexpected conjunctions, and reflecting on practices of writing. Participants will be asked to circulate a 500-word excerpt or description of a current project among the group in advance of the workshop. We welcome critical and creative projects within the fields of Pacific Studies, Environmental Humanities, Literary Studies, Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, and Poetics. Topics may include, but are not limited to, indigenous culture and art, decolonization, environmental justice, militarism, colonialism, and climate change.

The workshop is free of charge. To apply, please submit an expression of interest—including your name, institutional affiliation (if any), and a 100-word description of your field of interest and current project—to sei.events@sydney.edu.au no later than April 12th, 2019. (Selected participants will submit their 500 word text to a group dropbox no later than April 30th).

This workshop was presented at the University of Sydney on Tuesday 14 May, 2019.
