BDES1013: Design for Climate and Ecology

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Design for Climate and Ecology introduces students to sustainable architecture, developing their understanding of how buildings can respond holistically to the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. Students will investigate key themes including, passive and ecological design, health and well-being of people and community, as well as equity and place-making. In this unit, students will begin by analysing the design of a small-scale architectural project from a climatic and ecological design perspective, before applying and synthesising this knowledge through architectural project-based tasks. This will develop integrated skills to analyse, critique and synthesise technical and analytical design knowledge and processes.

Early feedback task

This unit includes an early feedback task, designed to give you feedback prior to the census date for this unit. Details are provided in the Canvas site and your result will be recorded in your Marks page. It is important that you actively engage with this task so that the University can support you to be successful in this unit.

Assessment summary

Assessment 1: Collective drawing (05%, W2), Assessment 2: Case study analysis (40%, W7) and Assessment 3: Analytical design (55%, W15).

Attendance: Students should be present and engaged in their learning during classes. Late arrival/early departure will be deemed as an absence. Students who do not meet the minimum 90% threshold, who have approved special consideration may be offered the opportunity to sit an alternative assessment to pass this unit.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Please note, as per the University of Sydney School of Architecture Design and Planning Faculty Resolutions 2022; For non-public assessments, work submitted after the deadline will incur a penalty of 5% of the total marks earned for the assessment per calendar day. Work submitted 20 calendar days or more after the deadline will not be assessed and will receive a mark of zero. For assessment involving public, oral, and/or visual presentations completed after the deadline, a penalty of 10% of the total marks earned for the assessment will be imposed per calendar day. Work completed 10 calendar days or more after the deadline will not be assessed and will receive a mark of zero.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Clause 8 (3) (a). Students are expected to attend a minimum of 90% of timetabled activities for each unit of study, unless granted exemption

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
