Overview

This unit of study builds upon on understandings and knowledge gained during the previous specialisation unit. Students will continue to consider key issues impacting on whether and how schools offer primary languages programs in NSW primary schools. The unit has a particular focus on the topics of digital literacies, diversity, depth of pedagogical knowledge, assessment, and content and language integrated teaching.

Assessment summary

Intercultural task design: Choose one Early Reader in your target language suitable for use in a Stage 2 or 3 classroom and design some tasks where students will be able to gain intercultural understandings.
Intercultural assessment design: Using Task 1 (above) as a starting point, design assessment tasks to assess the type of intercultural language learning outcomes that are intended from the tasks designed for your book.
Presentation to PowerPoint slides: It requires students to design and produce 6 slides and spoken text of a talk to parents of language learners in a primary school, speaking to them about the theory, research and practice of primary school language learning. The talk/presentation must mention at least five key notions about the teaching and learning of languages in NSW primary schools.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a High distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a Distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

If you use AI, you must always acknowledge it. Misusing AI may lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Co-created with students, AI in Education includes lots of helpful examples of how students use generative AI tools to support their learning. It explains how generative AI works, the different tools available and how to use them responsibly and productively.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: The Sydney School of Education and Social Work requires attendance of at least 90 percent of all seminars, workshops or lectures. Where a student is unable to attend at the required rate evidence of illness or misadventure may be required and the student may be required to undertake extra work. Students should discuss the circumstances of their absence(s) with the co-ordinator of the unit of study. Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

LO1. Demonstrate an ability to select appropriate reading material in the target language for a Stage 2 or 3 learner group and design suitable learning tasks with digital technologies for the learner group to engage interculturally with the reading material
LO2. Demonstrate the ability to design appropriate assessment tasks based on the reading material and assess intercultural learning.
LO3. Demonstrate an understanding of effective language teaching and programs in NSW primary schools and explore community (especially parents’) perceptions of language education within the primary school curriculum.
LO4. Design student-centred, inclusive, creative and challenging learning experiences that cater for students from a range of cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds.
LO5. Demonstrate familiarity with current educational theories regarding discipline and curriculum including cross-curriculum priorities
