How might a film be associated with a national identity? What does it mean to go beyond this identity and discuss a film from a transnational perspective? How does either a national or transnational approach to a film affect our understanding of film culture and aesthetics more generally? This unit is not an introduction to global cinemas; rather, it addresses core methods and issues of Film Studies from the perspective of transnational and transcultural exchanges. Particular focus will be on how distinct cultural and geopolitical conditions allow us to rethink such heuristic frameworks as film genre, auteur, and translation/adaptation.
