Overview

This Capstone unit of study will assist students in developing the qualities of an effective physician. The Unit will begin with a focus on advanced management of patients with complex clinical needs. From here, the Unit will cover critical non-clinical skills including ethical practice, teaching and leadership, and professional development. Finally, the Unit will guide students in the role of research in internal medicine, and deliver updates on cutting-edge innovations from experienced clinical researchers.

Assessment summary

Complex case report: Students will submit a report on a patient with a complex pattern of illness. This should be based on a patient the student has looked after in the course of their clinical work. The patient should have more than one illness such that their management has to take account of interconnected management priorities.The case report should conclude with a discussion on one or more aspects of patient management, appropriately referenced. Additionally, students will provide a brief presentation of their complex clinical case history among a group of peers, facilitated by a senior clinician.
Innovation presentation: Students will research and prepare a short presentation on a recent innovation in internal medicine that has impacted their practice.
Research proposal: This proposal should be for a piece of original research that is feasible for the student to perform or lead during their clinical training. Students will produce a draft research plan during the first half of the semester to be reviewed and allocated for discussion during the synchronous portion of the unit. During the Zoom sessions, students will participate in a discussion of their draft plan, and those of their colleagues, in small groups facilitated by teaching staff. Completion of the data gathering and analysis is not required for the Capstone but may be useful for other requirements in training.
Participation: Group discussions will take place during the online Zoom sessions
Reflective Statement: After attending the synchronous sessions, students will submit a reflective statement looking back on the synchronous/Zoom sessions and measure how participation in these sessions has caused them to reflect on and adapt their own clinical practice.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2021 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Use of generative artificial intelligence (AI)

You can use generative AI tools for open assessments. Restrictions on AI use apply to secure, supervised assessments used to confirm if students have met specific learning outcomes.

If you use AI, you must always acknowledge it. Misusing AI may lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Learning support

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Attendance and class requirements

Your attendance during the live zoom sessions (Modules 2 and 3) will be recorded and count towards 10% of your total mark for this semester. Whilst not compulsory, attendance is strongly encouraged and will allow you to directly engage with other students and the speaker. Sessions will be recorded.

Attendance of the 2 showcase sessions is a requirement of this unit. These sessions will not be recorded as they will be conducted in a series of zoom breakouts in which students will be required to present their assignments (Research Proposal, Complex clinical case).

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
