MEDS2012: Humans and our Environment

Semester 2, 2026 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

The ever-changing environment impacts human health and the fate of human evolution. This unit will explore how current advances in medical science are providing solutions to the environmental impacts on human health with a focus on eating, breathing, and sleeping. Environmental impacts include climate change, new and emerging diseases, toxins, which affect diet, exercise, and cues that influence healthy patterns such as sleep. This unit will take on interdisciplinary approaches to explore these impacts and completion of this unit will ensure you understand successful strategies and approaches to addressing these important challenges in the medical sciences into the future.

Late submission

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance and class requirements for units of study in Science majors and Programs

The University of Sydney Coursework Policy 2024 states:

68 (2) A student enrolled in a unit of study must comply with the requirements set out in the faculty resolutions, award course resolutions or unit of study outline about undertaking the unit of study, including on matters such as:

(a) attendance at and participation in lectures, seminars and tutorials; and

(b) participation in practical work.

(3) A program director may specify the circumstances under which a student who does not satisfy attendance and participation requirements may be deemed not to have completed a unit of study or award course.

 

The Faculty of Science Resolutions states:

9(2) Attendance and participation in a minimum number of assessment items or learning activities may be a requirement in any unit of study.

(4) Unless otherwise stated, students are expected to attend at least 80% of timetabled activities as defined in the unit of study outline.

(5) Failure to meet unit of study requirements may result in a fail grade.

 

Thus, attendance at a minimum of 80% of all timetabled classes is required for successful completion of this unit of study. Attendance will be recorded.

Skills and content taught in lecturettes, practicals and workshops will be directly assessed in Module Quizzes as well as the Final Exam.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Describe how humans can create healthy lives.
  • LO2. Describe the impacts of the environment on human health including pollution, toxins, climate change.
  • LO3. Propose defences to the challenges of a changing environment on human health including physiological responses to stress and mental wellbeing.
  • LO4. Collect, synthesise, analyse and critically evaluate medical science data and information from a range of sources.
  • LO5. Apply rational, independent and critical thought to the challenges the environment poses to the human body.
  • LO6. Demonstrate creative and innovative approaches to problem solving in medical science research by working effectively, responsibly, respectfully and safely in individual and collaborative contexts.
  • LO7. Communicate your knowledge of the environmental impacts to medical science using oral, visual and written formats.
