VETS6401: Small Animal Clinics A

Semester 1 DVM Placement Rotation 2, 2025 [Professional practice] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

This unit of study will provide students with essential experience and training in the management of primary care and emergency cases and the care of hospitalised patients at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney (UVTHS). Students will have the opportunity to practice clinically-relevant techniques such as history taking, physical examination, diagnostic sample collection, interpretation of radiographs and ultrasound, medical record keeping, critical analysis of case-related information, development and implementation of treatment plans and evaluation of outcomes. In primary care there is an additional focus on developing comprehensive wellness and preventative care, appropriate life stage and health status. The focus for emergency medicine will be on triage and care of cases presenting in an emergency situation. In addition, students will integrate various learning activities to effectively diagnose and treat patients and develop skills to enhance the client-veterinarian and veterinarian-patient relationship and form effective collegial teams. Some clinical consultations may be recorded for the purposes of review with students during this unit. There will be priority given to achievement of day one competencies. Risk assessments are regularly conducted for units that require the completion of compulsory learning activities that may expose students to zoonotic diseases. These assessments aim to identify appropriate risk mitigation controls, such as vaccination against vaccine- preventable zoonoses. Vaccination against Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) is an inherent requirement for students enrolling in this unit of study. Students must be vaccinated against Q fever before commencing the unit or no later than week two of the enrolled teaching session. Q fever vaccination is only available in Australia with the vaccination process taking three weeks to complete. Students must also submit a Q fever Vaccination Declaration upon enrolment. Students who fail to receive vaccination by the specified deadline and/or submit a Q fever Vaccination Declaration are precluded from practical learning activities and will not be able to satisfactorily complete relevant units of study and/or progress in their course more generally. Assessment summary

All required hurdle tasks, and compulsory forms must be submitted by no later than 11:59pm Australian Eastern Time on the last day of the placement unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant Unit of Study Coordinator in an approved Special Consideration application or an approved academic plan.

This includes marking your attendance on the Supervisor Report Form (SRF).  

- Ongoing feedback will be provided to the student intern throughout the clinical placement/ 
- Formative assessment will be provided on the Friday afternoon of week one by the clinical supervisor.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

The Sydney School of Veterinary Science has established attendance guidelines to ensure compliance with accreditation requirements.

The DVM Attendance Provision 2024 is available on the University of Sydney policy register.

All absences are subject to the University's special consideration application process and must be recorded on the Supervisor Report Form. Absences that equal or exceed 50% of the attendance requirement will result in the Unit of Study/placement being repeated.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Conduct a clinical consultation and using a systematic approach with integration of evidence. Complete the following components; collect a case history, conduct a clinical examination, formulate a problem list, develop a differential diagnosis list, create a logical diagnostic plan, develop an appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic plan.
  • LO2. Perform common veterinary preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • LO3. Identify clinical signs associated with common emergency presentations and develop an appropriate stabilisation, diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring plan for such cases.
  • LO4. Communicate (effectively and professionally) in diverse veterinary contexts. Communicate in written and verbal forms through medical records, client and colleague interactions and dissemination of scientific information
  • LO5. Contribute as a veterinary professional to the effective operation of the veterinary hospital by demonstrating behaviours expected of a veterinary professional including reliability, punctuality, time management, self-regulation and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

The placement will continue to offer opportunities for numerous consults, which help build independence and confidence, along with daily rounds and mid-rotation feedback, as these aspects were highly appreciated by students. The impact of group size on caseload is recognised, and efforts are being made to improve consistency in this area. Staffing in Primary Care has also been increased to provide more cases for students. In response to student feedback in the Emergency Critical Care placement, there will be a focus on developing more teaching materials to enhance the learning experience when caseloads are low.
