The Equine Centre Camden provides specialist pre-purchase equine examinations to support informed horse buying decisions.

Our equine veterinarians assess a horse's current health and soundness and tailor each examination to the horse's intended use. We work with individual horse owners, buyers and sellers (both interstate and local).

What a pre-purchase examination may include

A pre-purchase examination is a veterinary assessment designed to identify current or potential health issues that may affect a horse's suitability for its intended purpose. 
All pre-purchase examinations at the Equine centre Camden are performed in accordance with Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) guidelines. 

Depending on the horse's intended use, a pre-purchase examination may include a combination of the following:

  • Clinical and basic health examination
  • Gait assessment and lameness evaluation
  • Radiographs (X‑rays)
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • Blood testing
  • Upper airway endoscopy
  • Reproductive examination, where relevant

How are examinations planned?

Before the examination, our veterinarians will:

  • Discuss the buyer’s intended use of the horse
  • Review any particular concerns for the buyer
  • Design an examination plan appropriate to the horse and purchase purpose

The assessment is intended to provide clear, relevant information to support decision‑making.

Where are horse pre-purchase examinations performed?

On-farm examinations

Basic pre‑purchase examinations can be performed on‑farm, subject to location, facilities and suitability.

Hospital-based examinations

More in-depth examinations are performed at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden, Equine Centre, located at Brownlow Hill, where advanced diagnostic imaging and hospital facilities are available.
