What is equine rehabilitiation and therapy?

The Equine Centre Camden provides specialist equine rehabilitation and therapy services as part of our Equine Sports Medicine program.

Our rehabilitation services support horses recovering from injury or surgery, as well as performance and competition horses requiring targeted therapy to optimise strength, movement and comfort. Services are delivered in a veterinary teaching hospital setting, enabling close collaboration between rehabilitation clinicians and specialist veterinarians.

What is our approach?

Our approach to equine rehabilitation combines:

  • sports medicine expertise
  • advanced veterinary diagnostics
  • evidence‑based rehabilitation techniques
  • and holistic therapies, where clinically appropriate

All rehabilitation is delivered with a focus on functional recovery, comfort and long‑term performance, rather than short‑term symptom management.

Treatments may be delivered sequentially or concurrently, depending on the horse’s condition and the clinicians involved.

Who can access equine rehabilitation and therapy?

Our rehabilitation services support:

  • individual horse owners and families
  • pleasure, sport and performance horses
  • racing and trotting operations
  • stud farms and breeding enterprises
  • horses referred by local and regional veterinarians

While most clients are located within approximately 60km of our Camden location (410 Werombi Road), we also support regional NSW and interstate clients, particularly where specialist sports medicine or rehabilitation input is required.

Equine rehabilitation therapy supports a horse’s recovery following injury or surgery, and helps improve strength, comfort and function in performance horses. Rehabilitation programs are tailored to the individual horse and may include a combination of veterinary led therapies and controlled exercise planning.

Yes. All horses must undergo an initial veterinary assessment and have a rehabilitation plan established before attending a Rehabilitation Treatment Day. Treatment Days focus on delivering planned rehabilitation therapies rather than diagnosis or reassessment.

Rehabilitation therapies may include shockwave therapy, laser therapy, functional electrical stimulation, acupuncture, mesotherapy and guided rehabilitation exercises. Treatments are selected based on the horse’s condition, progress and rehabilitation goals

No. Rehabilitation and therapy services may also benefit performance and competition horses by supporting conditioning, addressing minor issues early, and helping maintain long‑term soundness and comfort.

Rehabilitation therapy is closely integrated with sports medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery at the Camden Equine Centre. This ensures rehabilitation plans are informed by diagnostic findings and aligned with the horse’s overall treatment and performance goals.
