The Equine Centre Camden provides specialist equine sports medicine services for horses experiencing lameness, performance limitations or exercise‑related conditions.

Our sports medicine team works with horses across all disciplines, from performance horses such as, eventers, show jumpers, racing and reigning to pony club, pleasure horses, trail riding and retired horses. We support accurate diagnosis, targeted treatment, and long‑term soundness.

Services are delivered within a veterinary teaching hospital environment, and at specialist clinics across the year, ensuring integrated care and specialist collaboration.

When is equine sports medicine recommended?

You may be referred to our sports medicine service if your horse:

  • shows signs of lameness or uneven gait
  • has reduced or inconsistent performance
  • experiences respiratory or airway issues during exercise
  • struggles with physical or behavioural limitations affecting performance
  • pre-purchase exams or return to work
  • requires rehabilitation post injury
  • experiences gastric ulceration

Early assessment can help identify underlying issues and guide appropriate management.

Who can access equine sports medicine services?

Our sports medicine service supports:

  • individual horse owners and families
  • pleasure, sport and performance horses
  • Thoroughbred, trotting and racing operations
  • horses referred by local, regional and interstate veterinarians

While most clients are based within approximately 40 km of our Camden location (410 Werombi Road), we also provide specialist assessment and support for regional NSW and national cases, particularly where advanced diagnostics or performance evaluation is required.

What is a sports medicine specialist?

A specialist veterinarian focusing on horse performance, diagnosis and rehabilitation. A vet who has done advanced further study in the region of sports medicine and rehabilitation in horses, completed a residency program, then passed exams to become board certified.

 

Equine sports medicine FAQs

No referral is required. We see horses for both primary consultations and second opinions, and we also welcome referrals from other veterinarians.

  • lameness or gait assessment

Advanced diagnostics or treatments may be scheduled on the same day or at a later visit, depending on your horse’s needs.

Yes. The Equine Centre at Camden has access to advanced diagnostic imaging and performance diagnostics, including MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound, digital radiography (x‑ray), dynamic upper airway endoscopy and cardiac assessment.

Some investigations can be completed as a day visit, while others may require hospital admission, depending on the tests being performed and your horse’s condition. This will be discussed with you as part of the assessment process.

The Equine Sports Medicine service is based at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden, Equine Centre, located at 410 Werombi Road, Camden. Most clients are within approximately 60 km, with referrals also accepted from regional NSW and interstate.
