Veterinary pathology underpins many clinical decisions, from routine health screening to complex disease investigation. At the University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, our pathology services for dogs support both emergency and referral cases, working closely with clinicians to deliver clear, reliable diagnostic information.

Our partner laboratory, Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Services (VPDS), allows for efficient testing, helping to minimise delays in diagnosis and treatment.

What we test

We perform a wide range of blood and urine tests to assess organ function, detect infection, inflammation, metabolic disease, and monitor chronic conditions in dogs.

Cytology involves microscopic examination of cells collected from masses, fluids or tissues. It provides rapid, minimally invasive diagnostic insight and is commonly used for tumour evaluation and inflammatory conditions.

Histopathology examines tissue samples in detail to provide a definitive diagnosis of many diseases, including cancer, immune mediated conditions and chronic inflammatory disorders.

Testing for bacterial, fungal and selected infectious agents helps guide targeted treatment and antimicrobial stewardship.

How does pathology support my dog's care?

Pathology results are interpreted in the context of your dog's clinical signs, imaging findings and medical history. Our pathologists work closely with internal medicine, oncology, surgery and emergency teams to ensure results directly inform treatment planning and follow up care.

Pathology for dogs FAQs

Veterinary pathology involves laboratory testing of blood, urine, tissues and cells to help diagnose disease and monitor health in dogs. Pathology results support clinical decision making and treatment planning.

Pathology testing may be recommended if your dog is unwell, has abnormal clinical signs, requires monitoring for a chronic condition, or needs further investigation following imaging or examination.

Common samples include blood, urine, tissue biopsies, fine needle aspirates, and body fluids. The type of testing depends on your dog's condition and clinical needs.

Turnaround times vary depending on the test. Some results are available quickly, while more specialised testing may take longer. Your veterinarian or specialist will discuss expected timeframes with you.

Pathology testing is usually arranged through a referring veterinarian or as part of a consultation at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals.

Pathology services are coordinated through the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Sydney and Camden, NSW, working closely with specialist clinicians and diagnostic laboratories.
