Complex engineering projects

Leading projects in a digital age

In the face of digital and technological transformations, our research is supporting project leaders to manage complexity and uncertainty in projects.

Our experts: Professor Jennifer Whyte, Dr Shahadat Uddin

This research investigates technical leadership in the delivery of large-scale complex projects and their supply-chains in established and emerging industries such as digital, new energy, infrastructure and manufacturing.

We are particularly interested in project analytics, knowledge discovery and the potential of AI to transform these settings. With our interests in the connections between technologies and organising, we draw on and contribute to work on project management, production management, operations research and engineering management.

Our research uses a range of methods, from lab-based work using simulation, modelling and network analyses to field research working with engineers and managers to understand the complexity and uncertainty they face. The theme aligns with the Faculty of Engineering's stretegic Net Zero and Digital Sciences initatives.
