Did you know the University of Sydney’s reach extends far beyond the sandstone buildings of our Camperdown campus?

We offer comprehensive educational opportunities throughout Western Sydney, including unique placements, units of study, and entire degrees based out of Westmead.

“We’re proud to be part of the vibrant Western Sydney community through our strong presence at the Westmead Health Precinct,” says Professor Nancy Baxter, Interim Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

“For more than 45 years, we’ve been deeply embedded in this precinct, investing in world-class facilities such as cutting-edge labs, simulation suites, and research infrastructure.”

Building a future-ready health workforce

The University of Sydney has partnerships within the Western Sydney Local Health District which provide students with opportunities to learn and build networks, engaging in work-integrated learning and projects that prepare them to address the health needs of their community.

These partnerships guarantee that our students are gaining hands-on clinical training and learning from experts in state-of-the-art environments, which will equip them to address the health needs of the area in the future.

“As Western Sydney’s population grows and changes, the need for skilled, compassionate health professionals has never been greater — and through this collaboration, we’re helping to build a future-ready workforce drawn from and for the community,” says Professor Baxter.

“By embedding our education programs within the multidisciplinary workplaces of the Westmead Health Precinct, we offer students in Western Sydney an unparalleled opportunity to learn in world-leading health, medical and research environments.”

Undergraduate courses in medicine and health at Western Sydney

We have two undergraduate courses that can be studied in Western Sydney.

First is our Bachelor of Biomedicine and Health, the first undergraduate degree taught entirely at Westmead, offering students direct access to advanced learning resources.

Designed to provide integrated and authentic learning experiences, this three-year degree is ideal for anyone looking to gain the skills and knowledge needed for a wide variety of careers across the health sector, including in health management, health and biomedical research, and related fields.

Our Bachelor of Biomedicine and Health degree also provides a strong foundation for those looking to pursue postgraduate study to become a health care professional.

“The Bachelor of Biomedicine and Health is a new course that offers a rich curriculum including authentic scenarios in health care and is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in human health, disease and treatment,” says Program Director Associate Professor Paul Austin.

Additionally, our Bachelor of Oral Health program enables students to gain diverse experiences by splitting their studies between Camperdown and Westmead, ensuring comprehensive exposure to different learning environments.

Over the three-year program, students acquire the skills necessary to prevent diseases and address oral health conditions, with a focus on adult care.

Graduates earn a dual qualification in dental hygiene and dental therapy, making them eligible for registration with the Dental Board of Australia and authorised to use diagnostic radiation.

By embedding our education programs within the multidisciplinary workplaces of the Westmead Health Precinct, we offer students in Western Sydney an unparalleled opportunity to learn in world-leading health, medical and research environments.

Postgraduate courses in medicine and health at Western Sydney

Our Master of Nursing allows students the choice to complete their studies entirely at Westmead.

You’ll be part of a tight-knit student cohort, have access to world class teaching facilities and benefit from high-quality nursing education.

“As tutorials, clinical skills teaching and clinical placement occur within the Westmead Hospital and the Local Health District, students become familiar with the facilities, routines and staff which can facilitate employment in these health facilities on completion of the degree,” says Program Director Dr Tonia Crawford.

Two specialisations within the Master of Medicine and Master of Science in Medicine are also taught at Westmead.

They are sexual and reproductive health, which has face-to-face components at Westmead, and trauma-informed psychotherapy, where in-person seminars happen at Westmead, as well as online.

We also offer the Doctor of Medicine across both our Westmead and Camperdown campuses.

Students in this program have the opportunity to undertake hospital-based learning at one of our clinical school locations, including Westmead Hospital, Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Nepean Hospital.

Additional postgraduate opportunities include the Doctor of Dental Medicine and various streams within the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry, such as special needs dentistry, oral medicine, oral implants, paediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, conscious sedation and pain control.*

Unlocking talent in Sydney’s West

At the Westmead campus, students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and personalised learning experiences, supported by strong partnerships with local hospitals and research centres.

Located within Australia’s largest health and biomedical research precinct, Westmead offers a unique education experience that prepares students to become future-ready health professionals.

Students also enjoy the benefits that come from being part of a smaller-size student cohort, with personalised learning experiences with academic staff. This means you’ll have the opportunity to build strong, supportive relationships with your classmates.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to bring high-quality education to the doorstep of local students and to help unlock the extraordinary talent that exists right here in Western Sydney,” says Professor Baxter.

“This real-world experience equips them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to tackle some of the most pressing health challenges, and to make a meaningful difference in the communities they call home.”

* Surgical Dentistry is taught at Westmead, Nepean and Surry Hills. Oral Surgery is taught at Nepean Hospital.
