Advanced training for oral health therapists

This course is for oral health therapists to expand their current scope of practice within their current registration division to include restorative treatment planning and procedures for adult patients.

Course overview

This course offers the Oral Health Therapist (OHT) or dual trained dental hygienist/dental therapist the opportunity to broaden their professional skill set to include restorative treatment planning and procedures for adult patients. The course has been revised to meet the needs of the working clinician and consists of online Zoom lectures, online Zoom case study discussions and 3 days of simulated clinical practice with the supervision of registered dentists.

The course will provide participants education and clinical skill development relevant to the provision of restorative treatment for adult patients, taking into consideration their periodontal status. Additionally, the course will include advanced didactic content such as cone-beam imaging, the role of medicines in managing oral health, an update in restorative dentistry, and adult restorative treatment planning.

This evidence-based course consists of three modules:

  • Fundamentals of adult restorative care
  • Management considerations for the adult patient
  • Adult restorative clinical practice

Topics to be covered

The objectives include:

  • Scope of practice and professional obligations for Adult Restorative and Oral Health Therapists
  • Update on local anaesthesia
  • Restorative Treatment Planning for the Adult Patient (with and without periodontal disease)
  • Posterior restorations and the adult patient
  • Preventive management of root caries
  • Radiology review and cone-beam imaging

 

The objectives include:

  • Trauma from Occlusion and Toothwear: Role of the OHT in assessment and management
  • Management of patients with temporomandibular joint disorders and orofacial pain
  • Patients presenting with Removable and Fixed Prostheses
  • Drug and alcohol use disorders
  • Role of medications in managing oral health
  • Obstructive sleep apnea

The objectives include:

  • Adult restorative treatment planning workshops
  • Application of clinical restorative skills in the provision of simple direct restorations in the adult patient
  • Simulation practice

Participants will have three days to practice their restorative skills and will be provided with instruments and a Columbia Typodont Model for use within the University of Sydney Simulation Clinic. Participants may be required to purchase more plastic teeth to practice from the vending machine, which is available at the simulation premises.`

All participants are required to follow the simulation practice protocol.

  • Proof of current AHPRA registration as either an oral health therapist or dual trained dental hygienist/dental therapist.
  • Proof of graduation with either an undergraduate degree in oral health therapy or dental hygiene and dental therapy
  • Certificate of professional indemnity insurance
  • Please note – we can only accept candidates who have no restrictions on clinical practice.

The simulation component of this course is a mandatory requirement to obtain a certificate of completion for this course.

Course structure:  This course will be delivered predominantly online. It will consist of a series of videos, Zoom lectures and Zoom Workshops. The final section of the course will be a 3 day workshop of simulated practice
