Use evidence to inform policy and planning
This short course will equip you with the knowledge of a range of theoretical frameworks and approaches to develop an understanding of the relationship between evidence, policy and planning.

Course overview

The aim of this unit is to increase students' understanding about the links between evidence and policy and planning and to build skills for making an evidence based case for change and implementing evidence based policy.

The unit also advances conceptualisations of evidence for policy to include citizen, consumer and community experience as evidence.

By the end of this short course students will be able to:

  • Use evidence to identify areas that require policy change
  • Search for and critically appraise evidence for policy design and implementation 
  • Understand key theories of the use of evidence in policy and practice; Critically analyse the role of evidence in policy and political processes
  • Understand citizen and community experience as evidence
  • Use evidence effectively in a case for policy change.

Important: This short course is a variant of the unit of study, Evidence into Policy and Planning (HPOL5008) It enables you to complete the unit without formal university enrolment. You will receive a certificate of completion. However, you will not receive credit points towards a University of Sydney degree.

What happens next?

Once payment has been processed:

You will receive an email confirming receipt of payment

2-3 weeks from the beginning of classes:

You will receive a welcome email from the Sydney School of Public Health Education Support team, containing your e-learning login details and orientation materials.

2 weeks from the beginning of classes:

You will be able to access the e-learning Canvas site for the course. The Unit of Study Coordinator will provide you with a list of the readings.

After completing the course:

Please contact the Sydney School of Public Health Education Support team (ssph.education-support@sydney.edu.au) to receive a copy of your Completion Certificate. 

Cancellation

If you decide to cancel your enrolment, the following penalty will apply:

  • Cancellation received before the start of classes: the full course fee will be refunded.
  • Cancellation received on or after the first day of classes: no refund.
