Sydney Analytical boasts a comprehensive array of instrumentation, featuring state-of-the-art and non-invasive analytical techniques that enable new insights to be gained from items in museum and art gallery collections, as well as archaeological and palaeontological artefacts.

Laboratory and Portable equipment

We have established expertise in the characterisation of items of cultural heritage with a broad suite of suitable equipment.

Our portable equipment for XRF, Raman, infrared and macro imaging allows us to bring the equipment to the objects.  We also offer the capacity for detailed 2D and 3D mapping with our laboratory instruments.

Chau Chak Wing Museum

We have an analytical space in the Chau Chak Wing Museum which allows us to collaborate with the Museum on scientific investigation of items in their collection.

Internal and external users

Scientific analyses performed at Sydney Analytical will help both internal and external users to:

  • examine and identify chemical alteration phenomena
  • inform cultural heritage diagnostics, conservation and restoration
  • identify materials and methods used in the making of artefacts, which illuminate the history and stories that give life to our cultural heritage.

Our state-of-the-art infrastructure supports research and industry development in fields such as museum and cultural studies, conservation and archaeology.

Cultural heritage videos
