Advancing age and elevated eye pressure are leading risk factors for loss of the nerve cells that fill the optic nerve and transmit the visual message from the eye to the brain.

The Optic Nerve Research Collaborative Australia (ORCA) is looking to find new therapeutic approaches to protecting the optic nerve.

Research areas

Optic nerve disease: Ageing, Metabolic Dysfunction, and Translational Research

Advancing age is associated with a loss of nerve resilience to injury and disease. We aim to develop new therapeutic approaches to reverse the effect of ageing by tackling the some of the cellular processes linked to the ageing process. In particular, we are looking to restore metabolic function and mitochondrial health.

  • A multi-targeted approach to restoring NAD- a key molecule in cellular respiration
  • Boosting mitochondrial quality control
  • Mitochondria targeting RNA therapies
