  • be an alumnus or enrolled in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music
  • be wanting to study operatic studies, piano or violin overseas
  • be 26 years of age or younger

Note: International students may not apply for this scholarship if the proposed travel is to their country of citizenship.

Background

This scholarship was established through the Estate of the late George Wallace Henderson and Margaret Trevor Henderson.

1. Background

a. The George and Margaret Henderson Scholarship is to provide scholarships to students of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to travel overseas to further their studies as an operatic singer, pianist or violinist.

b. This Scholarship was established from the Estate of George Wallace Henderson.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be either:

I. currently enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, or
II. alumni of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

b. Applicants must be wanting to study overseas to further their music education in either:

I. operatic studies,
II. piano studies, or
III. violin studies.

c. Applicants must be 26 years of age or younger at the time of application.

d. International applicants may not apply for this Scholarship if the proposed travel is to their country of citizenship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. curriculum vitae, and
III. project proposal including projected budget when travelling overseas.

b. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship value and duration will be determined by the Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and will be stipulated in the Scholarship Offer Letter to the successful recipient(s).

b. The Scholarship value will be paid in one single instalment on receipt of the completed Scholarship Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval. 

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. None apply.

6. Termination

a. A recipient enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music will have their scholarship terminated if they:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. withdraws or fails to complete the approved travel overseas, 
III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or
IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. A recipient who is an alumni of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music will have their scholarship terminated if they:

I. withdraw or fail to complete the approved travel overseas, or
II. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application.

c. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

d. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
