Industry programs and internships

Gain the experience to kickstart your career

We partner with industry to give students work experience, internships, and study programs, improving your employability skills while you study.

Studying science opens up a world of opportunities. Whether you aspire to lead the way in scientific research, cultivate your analytical and critical thinking skills, or contribute to making the world a better place, we have a range of internships and placements available.

Our industry programs and internships enable you to gain valuable experience and build a network that can help jumpstart your career. Many of these opportunities can also count towards your degree.

Our industry partnerships with organizations such as MAURI, Harris Farms Markets, Kantar, GMP Pharmaceuticals, AGL Energy, National Measurement Institute Australia, ANSTO Minerals, NSW Parliament, Westpac, and PwC Australia have led to students securing jobs, developing crucial skills, and establishing connections in their chosen fields.

While interning with ANSTO Minerals, I learnt a lot about the chemistry involved in extracting resources like uranium and rare earth metals. I also learned how important high-quality metals are to our modern world. I got to experience how scientific organisations operate on a day-to-day basis. Not to mention making a lot of friends along the way! It was a fresh and exciting experience, completely different from undergraduate chemistry labs and even honours!

Placement opportunities

The Agricultural Science Professional Development program encourages students to gain experience across a wide range of agriculture related industries, introducing them to the many career opportunities available to them after graduation. Students are encouraged to apply their skills and knowledge in a professional environment, while also developing a real-world view of agricultural industries.

With the opportunity to conduct placements over 40 days, students retain autonomy over placement site selection enabling them to tailor their experiences to align with their own interests and career goals.

Final year Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students undertake clinical rotations through a variety of career placements.

As a student intern you will complete rotations at our University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals and with our partners in veterinary education. Core placements are within the areas of small animal practice, rural mixed practice and government agencies. Elective rotations may be in a wide variety of areas and enable you to focus on particular career interests such as government, industry, research specialist practice, equine and wildlife.

One of the most exciting opportunities available to chemistry students is the chance to undertake the elective Year in Industry program.

The program allows students to take their third year of study in full-time employment in the chemical industry or a government scientific laboratory. The work ranges from the analysis of industrial chemicals to the testing of new pharmaceutical products and will expose students to the use of a wide range of instrumentation and techniques.

This opportunity not only allows students to broaden their skills and gain experience, but also opens up opportunities for future employability and research projects.

This Program Director is Professor Francois Aguey-Zinsou and current students can find more information here.

Industry and Community Project Units (ICPUs) provide you with the opportunity to work on authentic problems and issues set out by industry, community and government organisations.

In collaboration with an industry partner and an academic lead, you will work in a group with other students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Together you will research, analyse and present solutions to real world problems set by the external partner organisation. You will then have the opportunity to engage with and learn from industry experts and present your recommendations and ideas to the industry partner.

We have partnered with more than 85 business, government, and community organisations in Australia and globally to give you the opportunity to work on real-world projects. Partners include ACON, Bridge Housing, PTW Architects, Cartier, Gilbert and Tobin Lawyers, JLLParatus Clinical, Powerhouse Museum, TATA India, The Smith Family, Ventia, Ernst and Young, ANSTO, Westpac Bank and many more.

High-achieving students in our Dalyell Scholars program have the opportunity to work with our researchers on real research projects during their studies, providing a launching pad into a career as a scientist in their chosen field.
