Speed up your degree with extra study opportunities
With over 200 units of study available online between semesters, undertaking an intensive session is a great way to gain credits or to help you catch up on an important unit of your degree.

What is an intensive session?

Throughout the year the University runs additional study sessions, called intensive sessions, where units of study are taught over a short period. These sessions run over six weeks or less, and offer an opportunity to complete study in addition to units you take in Semester 1 or 2.

Why do an intensive session?

Intensives can help if you are looking to accelerate a course and gain credit points more quickly. They also allow you to catch up on a failed unit of study, and are sometimes required if you are completing a placement or an industry project.

What to know before applying

In exploring your options for intensive sessions, there are a few requirements and guidelines you should be aware of first.

You need to make sure the unit of study meets your course requirements and you have satisfied the prerequisites so it will actually count towards your degree. Course rules and unit of study guidelines can be find in your course handbook.

You need to make sure you have enough credit points available to complete a unit during an intensive session, as well as your units during the semester. A maximum of 32 credit points is allowed across a teaching period, including the main semester and intensives.

International students

If you’re an international student on a student visa, you need to have an active eCoE and visa that covers any period that you're studying in. If you were approved for a suspension in your first semester of study, you are unable to undertake an intensive session before the start date of the standard semester.

What is available to study?

Intensive sessions span all faculties and schools, so there is a good chance your degree will have options for intensives.

To view an up to date list of units currently available, log into Sydney Student and view the units available in your unit of study selection screen. The session code will be outlined next to each unit. For example, Intensive July has a session code S2CIJL. For details about when these sessions run and the session codes, you can view our study dates page.
