Staying safe on campus

The safety of our University community is everyone's responsibility. Keep informed of our support and procedures to foster a safe environment for yourself and others, both on campus and when travelling to and and from our campuses.

In an emergency 

1. Dial triple zero (000)

Dial triple zero (000) for emergency services (fire/ambulance/police). Calling the police is the quickest way to get help in an emergency.

2. Call Protective Services (1800 793 457)

Notify Protective Services on 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457). The Protective Services team are on-call 24 hours a day, every day of the year to assist with an emergency or safety threat. The team are certified to perform first aid and their vehicles are equipped with automatic defibrillators.

Getting to and from campus safely 

From cycling and public transport to our courtesy bus, there are many different ways you can travel to and from our campuses safely. 

Our courtesy bus

The University offers three courtesy bus routes, and a free shuttle bus that runs in the evening between Fisher Library (Camperdown campus) and Redfern station.

There is also a free shuttle bus between Camperdown campus, Mallet St and Australian Technology Park, as well as to and from Camden campus.

If you're travelling to and from campus early in the morning or late in the evening, the courtesy bus is a safe and efficient way to travel.

Public transport 

Depending on where you're coming from and which campus you're travelling to, there's likely to be a train, metro, bus or ferry to get to and from our campuses. 

When travelling on public transport, ensure you mind the step or gap when getting on and off the service, slow down during wet weather and keep your valuables close to you.

Walking

When walking to, from and around the University, watch out for traffic and use designated road crossings. Never cross a road while using headphones, a mobile phone or when the pedestrian light is red.

Cycling 

Did you know that we have over 200 bicycle parking racks on campus? To support and promote more environmentally friendly ways of getting to campus, we've also implemented end-of-trip facilities and water refill stations across the University.

We also have three bicycle repair stations situated across our Camperdown/Darlington campus, so you can ride safely home. To find cycling amenities, search for them on Campus Maps. 

When parking your bicycle or scooter, we recommend you take advantage of the indoor parking locations where practical. This is to help ensure the security of your bicycle and to mitigate damage from weather or other external forces. We also recommend using a D-lock to secure your bicycle or scooter to the rack – these locks are top-rated due to their strength and durability. 

If your bicycle, scooter or other valuable items are stolen, please report the incident to Protective Services.

Safety on campus

Whether you're on campus for just an hour, throughout the day or on the weekend or out-of-hours, it's important to stay safe and alert while working and learning at our campuses.

High-risk areas 

Some areas of the University pose specific risks to health and safety, such as laboratories and workshops. Unauthorised access to these areas is restricted, to ensure we keep our community safe.

Shared study spaces

When working in our Libraries and shared study spaces, ensure you do not leave your valuables unattended, such as your laptop, USB drives and learning materials. Even if you leave the study space and intend to come back shortly, it's important to take your valuables with you or leave them with someone you trust.

Accessing campus out-of-hours

On weekends and out-of-hours (before 8 am and after 6 pm), buildings on campus are put into ‘secure mode’. Secure mode helps us limit the risk of unauthorised entry, keeping our community safe.

If you require access to buildings during this time, you will need to swipe your student card to enter.
