Sophie’s internship exposed her to a diverse array of projects, allowing her to gain firsthand insight into the workings of a busy architectural practice. Her projects included large-scale developments, such as the King Fahd International Stadium in Saudi Arabia, as well as smaller office fit-outs for Stadium Australia.

She collaborated with professionals from diverse fields, gaining deeper insights into different career paths and opportunities within architecture.
"I have had the opportunity to work with architects, project managers, interior designers and more. Everyone I’ve crossed paths with has been so willing to share their expertise and knowledge, which has been so lovely."
Throughout her time at Populous, Sophie has gained technical skills and a deeper understanding of how large-scale projects are managed. She has worked on multiple phases of projects, from early conceptual designs to documentation and final delivery.
"The feeling of seeing a space that you were involved in documenting come to life is so amazing."
Her internship presented learning curves and opportunities to upskill on industry-standard software.
"Understanding and knowing how to use some of the main programs was a challenge I faced, but with time I have learnt more of these skills and become more comfortable."
Following her placement at Populous, Sophie feels prepared to step into the industry.
"Working at Populous has really improved my technical skills and general understanding of how projects work. I think after graduating, this experience will allow me to be more confident in the workplace and be sure of my abilities going forward."
Sophie encourages students taking on a work experience opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the experience.
"Having an internship opportunity will bring challenges, but it’s important to know you also bring something to the workplace.”
“People are often more willing to help you than you may think so ask many questions and be honest about what you are still learning.”
She also highlights the importance of participation beyond just project work.
"Being in an architecture studio involves more than just project work too; so get involved in social activities, design review and whatever else is going on."
