Social Work and Policy Studies

Enacting social change through critical practice, policy and research

Striving to engage critically across multiple oppressions, exploring and engaging in various forms of resistance, social change, social policy and social justice initiatives.

Established as the first social work discipline in Australia in 1940, the Social Work and Policy Studies (SWPS) team at The University of Sydney brings together established and emerging educators and researchers striving to make a difference alongside our students, fellow staff, and broader community and industry stakeholders.

Our vision is to provide robust and reflective social work education leading to responsive social work practice, policy and research. We strive to decolonise, deconstruct and disrupt through the dynamic inclusion of lived experience, diversity and transformative dissent. This leads to deep dialogue, interdisciplinary collaborations and social change.

Please reach out and join our shared conversations and community to create collegial, collective and collaborative change with social work and policy studies at The University of Sydney. We run various events and engagements across the year, and we warmly welcome all possible opportunities to connect and contribute to these critical change processes and practices.

Our research

We acknowledge that our research occurs across the unceded sovereign lands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia. We strive to ensure Indigenous methodologies, knowledges and approaches are meaningfully included across all our work.

Human rights and social justice are fundamental to our research across social work and policy studies. Researchers from The University of Sydney strive to be reflective, versatile and skilled in a range of practice areas, and able to translate professional values into action. Our research is founded on the interdependence of theory, practice, policy, and research.

We support the conduct of rigorous, theoretically-informed, relevant and timely social research. We work in collaboration with students, practitioners, agencies and the wider community to disrupt, deconstruct and decolonise towards social change. We aim to influence contemporary state, national and international social policy debates and social work practice approaches privileging lived experiences and their narratives.
