How did you get involved in the Business Consulting Practicum?

I was drawn to this unit after seeing the program introduction on the university website, which aligned perfectly with my goals of building consulting knowledge. Additionally, peers who had taken the practicum previously offered their positive feedback, coupled with the course’s focus on practical experience, making this an ideal choice for achieving my career goals.

Can you describe your overall experience in the program?

This program provided an immersive, hands-on experience through direct interaction with KPMG Australia, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge from university and practical workplace skills. The real-world case study engagement gave me a sample of the consulting industry’s workflow, where every phase, from client engagement to project delivery, closely resembles the processes used in professional consulting settings.

What were the highlights of the program?

The standout feature of this curriculum was the active involvement of KPMG professionals throughout the course. Beyond guest lectures, KPMG experts participated in each tutorial, working closely with individual groups and offering us invaluable insights into industry expectations and consulting processes, making the learning experience feel practical and relevant. Their sage feedback and constructive reviews during every step of the project helped refine our approach to closely meet client requirements.

What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I encountered was collaborating with a diverse team, where members came from various cultural and academic backgrounds. This diversity enriched our project by providing different perspectives but also required a nuanced approach to teamwork and leadership. However, to maximise our team’s capabilities, we tried to create an inclusive environment that respected each member’s background and expertise.

Which career skills do you think you developed through your participation in the program?

I do think more than just learning any one specific skill, I gained proficiency in integrating diverse knowledge into a cohesive project. This included the ability to quickly learn and master insights from multiple fields and apply knowledge to create practical deliverables. This experience has prepared me to keep pace with evolving industry standards and deliver well-rounded, impactful solutions in the long run.
