Professor Hala Zreiqat AM elected Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW
University of Sydney biomedical engineering Professor Hala Zreiqat AM has been recognised by her peers for ongoing contributions in her field by Royal Society of New South Wales, the oldest scientific society in the state.
Professor Hala Zreiqat AM has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales for her substantial contributions in the fields of engineering and science.
“It is indeed an honour to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW and a privilege to be in the league of so many other eminent Fellows,” says Professor Zreiqat.
“The award is testament to the contributions our research has been making in the space of medical devices.”
Professor Zreiqat and her team have developed the world’s first synthetic biomaterials capable of healing large bone defects, even in load-bearing positions such as the spine or lower limbs.
She is the sixth elected fellow to the society from the Faculty of Engineering, following the previous elections of Professors Marcela Bilek, Hugh Durrant-Whyte, Itai Einav, David Levinson and Mikhail Prokopenko.
The Royal Society of New South Wales is dedicated to the furtherance of knowledge and traces its origins to the Philosophical Society of Australasia, established in 1821, which was the first scientific society in the then British colony of New South Wales.
The award is the latest of many achievements for Professor Zreiqat, who has also recently been inducted as fellow into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. These fellowships recognise outstanding contributions to the health and medical research landscape in Australia.
"I am humbled and honoured to be inducted to the AAHMS Fellowship and to be recognised by my outstanding peers in the science and health sectors. I owe this to my amazing current and past group members."
Professor Zreiqat is also the 2018 NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year and was awarded the 2019 Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology. She was also elected as a Member in the General Division by the Governor-General during this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.
