The Concord Clinical School is a Sydney Medical School teaching hospital based at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, which serves the local communities of Concord, Strathfield, Burwood and beyond.
Our teaching program provides a supportive and cooperative environment for integrated, interdisciplinary learning at all levels, from medical students through to graduate studies and medical professional training.
Our research is associated with the ANZAC Research Institute, a state-of-the-art facility for biomedical research with a focus on ageing, the Asbestos Disease Research Institute, the Centre for Education and Research on Ageing, and the NSW Institute of Sports Medicine.
Our clinical school teaches from the Concord Medical Education Centre situated on the hospital grounds. The centre has state of the art medical education facilities with a 140 seat auditorium, lecture, tutorial and meeting rooms and a dedicated simulation centre, providing the latest advancements in simulation technology.
This room has a SimMan 3G manikin, which is currently one of the most advanced manikins available. This manikin is controlled via Wi-Fi to an instructor’s computer, and can replicate various patient conditions and symptoms. The room is fully fitted out with gas supply to allow for ventilation and anaesthetic machines, along with a cardiac monitor.
This room is used for team training and patient scenarios, where all aspects of patient care are observed; for example, clinical skills, examination skills, procedural skills, communication, documentation and teamwork.
This room is designed in line with the College of Surgeons requirements for surgical training including minimal invasive surgery, as well as anaesthetic skills training for things such as cirocoidectomies.
This room has surgical scrub sinks with a plaster trap, stainless steel benches for easy cleaning and AV smart board to enable video feeds from the other rooms. The room is designed to allow students to practice their surgical skills, which can be integrated into a ‘real life’ patient scenario.
This simulation program is designed to look at those patients with psychosis and their cardiac & metabolic risk factors, which are usually high and not currently managed well in the existing health system.
As a joint venture between Concord Clinical School, Concord Centre for Mental Health, Diabetes Australia and the School of Rural Health (Dubbo & Orange), the facilities available in this clinic exist to serve a range of disciplines as well as students from city based and rural hospitals.
This purpose built room has been designed to enable high quality video’s to be developed for educational purposes, which can also be video conferenced to rural clinical schools.
The video room is used for filming various patient scenarios, which can be used fo educational or research purposes. The room includes video cameras, special green backgrounds, and profession lighting and post-production equipment.
This facility offers a perfect opportunity for improving a broad range of clinical skills through simulted patients experiences, which can be recorded and analysed in an educational setting.
Research training opportunities at the Concord Clinical School are available in a range of disciplines and spanning the spectrum from basic laboratory-based research through applied clinical research to epidemiology and population studies.
Our researchers have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and a range of research centres, institutes and groups with significant capability in research related to ageing, asbestos-related diseases and sports medicine.

The ANZAC Research Institute offers a state of the art research facility situated on the grounds of Concord Hospital. It is an NHMRC accredited independent medical research institute, with a unique primary focus on the study of cellular and genetic mechanisms associated with age-related diseases.

The Andrology Laboratory is primarily focused on the study of male reproductive biology. Principle areas of research include male fertility and the hormonal regulation of sperm production (spermatogenesis) and testicular development.

The Biogerontology Laboratory, located within the ANZAC Research Institute, is the biological research arm of the Centre for Education and Research on Ageing (CERA). The role of the Biogerontology Laboratory is to investigate the biological causes of ageing and age-related diseases.

The Bone Research Program pursues research in basic bone biology, applied bone metabolism and clinical research into metabolic bone disease. The goal of the Bone Biology Lab to offer a comprehensive research program that includes transgenic animal models, molecular biology, histology, surrogate marker measurements and clinical research.

The Neurobiology Laboratory, is an internationally recognised research group in the field of neurogenetics. The group’s neurogenetic research focuses on the search for genes for various neurodegenerative diseases, particularly those which if defective cause forms of peripheral nerve and motor neuron disease. The research group has mapped the genes for three new hereditary neuropathies in the last few years.

There are a large variety of projects in cardiovascular medicine that can be offered to students both at the ANZAC Research Institute as well as Concord Clinical School. These studies range from basic cellular and molecular science through human physiology and pathophysiology.

The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute at Concord is the world’s first stand-alone asbestos research facility dedicated to the prevention and treatment of asbestos diseases. The institute is housed within the Bernie Banton Centre at Concord Hospital.
The Centre for Education and Research on Ageing (CERA) is a multidisciplinary centre that aims to improve the health and quality of life of older people through research into ageing, diseases of old age and service delivery.
The NSW Institute of Sports Medicine focuses on research, multidisciplinary sports medicine assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services for elite and recreational athletes. The institute provides training opportunities, both undergraduate and postgraduate, in sports medicine.
