This Scholarship was established in 2020 to provide assistance to students undertaking a Summer Research Project at the Image X Institute. This Scholarship is funded from either the NHMRC Investigator Grant for the project Cancer Imaging and Targeted Radiation Therapy: From Discovery to Clinical Practice, or the NHMRC Investigator Grant for the project Advancing dynamic MRI to enable adaptive lung radiotherapy.
1. Background
a. This Scholarship was established in 2020 to provide assistance to students undertaking a Summer Research Project at the Image X Institute.
b. This Scholarship is funded from either the NHMRC Investigator Grant for the project Cancer Imaging and Targeted Radiation Therapy: From Discovery to Clinical Practice or the NHMRC Investigator Grant for the project Advancing dynamic MRI to enable adaptive lung radiotherapy.
2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must be currently enrolled at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must satisfy one of the below criteria:
I. are currently in at least their second year of their undergraduate degree and will not complete their degree before March 2026 or
II. are currently in at least their first year of their Masters by coursework degree and will not complete their degree before March 2026.
c. Applicants must have an academic background in:
I. mathematics,
II. physics (including medical physics),
III. computer science, or
IV. engineering (biomedical, mechatronics, or electrical).
d. Applicants must have previous research experience or express an interest in research.
e. Applicants must be available to conduct research full-time (35 hours per week) in one of the identified summer research projects available at the Image X Institute over an 8-week period
f. Applicants must conduct the project on-site, for safety reasons. Hybrid working preferences could be accommodated where project needs allow but applicants must be available to work on-site in business hours for at least four days a week.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit,
II. a personal statement outlining the applicant’s background, experience and interest in research,
III. curriculum vitae, and
b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of the supervisory team of each project.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $6,424.00 and is tenable for eight weeks.
b. The Scholarship value will be paid in two equal instalments at the beginning and end of the summer research project.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from the approved summer research project,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance or conduct during the project,
III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or
IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
6. Reporting
a. Recipients of this Scholarship are required to submit a report and complete a presentation on their research at the end of their project.
