Schweitzer Dentistry Scholarship

1. Background

a. This scholarship was established in 2026 to support students experiencing disadvantage who are in their final year of the Bachelor of Oral Health or Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Sydney. Its purpose is to encourage students to remain enrolled in their course and successfully complete their studies.

b. This Scholarship has been donated by Emilie Marguerite Schweitzer in memory of her late  husband Frederick Schweitzer, Bachelor of Dentistry (University of Sydney).

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being currently enrolled fulltime in their final year of the Bachelor of Oral Health or Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be experiencing financial hardship:

I. Domestic students who demonstrate financial hardship, and receive a Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) means-tested income support payment such as:

i. ABSTUDY

ii. Austudy

iii. Youth Allowance

iv. Disability Support Pension

v. Parenting Payment (Single)

vi. Carer Payment.

II. International students who demonstrate financial hardship, and hold one of the following Australian refugee and humanitarian visas:

i. Global Special Humanitarian (subclass 202)

ii. Humanitarian Stay visa (subclass 449)

iii. Protection visa (subclass 866)

iv. Refugee visas (subclass 200, 201, 203 and 204)

v. Resolution of Status visa (subclass 851)

vi. Safe Haven Enterprise visa (subclass 790)

vii. Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa (subclass 786)

viii. Temporary Protection visa (subclass 785).

c. Applicants must have a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 at the time of the  application.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, and

II. a personal statement outlining your commitment to your field of study, explaining why you believe you should be awarded the scholarship, and describing your future career aspirations.

b. Shortlisted applicants may need to attend an interview (face to face or online) with the selection committee.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean, Sydney Dental School, or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship value is at $10,000.00 per annum and is tenable for up to one year only.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid a lump sum payment upon receipt of completed and signed acceptance form.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

IV. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship,

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave,

VI. does not present at the conference for which the funds were awarded, or

VII. does not declare funding applied or received for the same conference from an alternative source.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
