Sydney-Vietnam Research Innovation Showcase

Showcasing partnerships between The University of Sydney and Vietnam
On 13 December 2018, the University of Sydney and Sydney Vietnam Academic Leadership Group hosted the Sydney-Vietnam Research Innovation Showcase at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi.

The event highlighted the successes in research and education between the University and its partners across Vietnam. A wide range of faculties and schools presented their research to attendees including Medicine and Health, Science, Health Science, Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Sydney Business School.

Vietnam has been an active research and education partner of the University of Sydney as evidenced by the breadth of activities demonstrated by the presenters.

The event was led by Professor Duncan Ivison, Deputy Vice Chancellor Research of the University of Sydney and attended by prominent partners in Vietnam including

  • H.E. Mr Craig Chittick (Australian Ambassador to Vietnam),
  • Mr Robert Estcourt, Chairman of the board, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research
  • Associate Professor Tran Thi Giang Huong from the Ministry of Health,
  • Professor Pham Duc Nghiem from the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as university’s research and education partners:
    • Professor Ngo Quy Chau from Bach Mai hospital,
    • Associate Professor Tran Diep Tuan from University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, Associate
    • Professors Luu Ngo Hoat and Haphan Hai An from Hanoi Medical University, and
    • Professor Nguyen Quy Thanh from the University of Education and Associate
    • Professor Nguyen Viet Nhung from the National Lung Hospital who was awarded as an Honorary Associate Professor of the University of Sydney on the day.

The program was filled with research presentations and discussions from a variety of Sydney and Vietnamese researchers. The research topics below are just a few that were presented among many other interesting research that are emerging from the University:

  • Restaurant and Customer behaviour in Da Nang City (Dr Chinh Ho
  • Managing parasitic nematodes of coffee using organic soil amendments (Prof David Guest and Khoa Dang Le),
  • Scaling Social Enterprises (Dr Linh Nguyen)
  • A variety of Tuberculosis research projects addressing stigma, adherence technologies and transmission,
  • Maternal health literacy among minority women (Prof Kirsty Foster)
  • Anthropological studies of Ho Chi Minh City (Dr Robbie Peters)

Breakout sessions were hosted by top University of Sydney and Vietnamese academics which focused discussions on publishing in international journals, writing competitive research grants and effective research supervision and career development. The Sydney Vietnam Academic Leadership Group announced a series of research grants supported by the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre for new research projects between the University of Sydney and its partners in Vietnam aiming to help build and develop new and existing collaborations.
